Why Grain Direction Matters in Wooden Chair Design
Wood is anisotropic: it behaves differently along and across its grain. A chair must make that directional structure part of its geometry.
Following the load
Long fibres can serve slender members efficiently when they follow the principal load path. Abrupt cross-grain transitions and short grain near joints can create vulnerable areas, particularly in curved components.
Form and stock
A digital surface may look continuous while the material needed to carve it contains inefficient or weak grain. Designers can split the form into components, use bent or laminated strategies where appropriate, or reshape transitions so grain remains useful.
Stabilization is not a substitute
Resin impregnation may change some properties, but it does not make grain direction irrelevant. Structural design, material selection, joinery and tests remain necessary.
