A convincing sculptural chair is not a single beautiful surface. It is a chain of decisions that must survive scale, material and repeated use.
Define the human geometry
Seat height, depth, back angle, clearances and contact areas establish the working envelope. Form can move freely only after the body has a credible place within it.
Model the structure
CAD connects visible surfaces to section thickness, joints and load paths. A manufacturable concept can be divided into parts that fit available stock and machining access while preserving visual continuity.
Prototype in stages
Small 3D prints test silhouette and assembly logic. Full-scale low-cost mock-ups test posture. Wooden prototypes reveal grain, tolerances, machining sequence and finishing effort.
Machine and refine
CNC equipment creates repeatable reference geometry, but tool access and workholding influence every part. Hand refinement may unify transitions and create the final tactile surface.
Test, then specify
Measured loads, cyclic use and environment-specific exposure turn a concept into evidence. Refinement continues until form, comfort, construction and material behavior agree.
